In partnership with Fuller Theological Seminary, Asian Pastoral Institute invites you to join in an afternoon of presentations and fellowship:

Presenting Asian Pastoral Institute and Fuller Theological Seminary

Dr David Jeremiah Seah

Dr David Jeremiah Seah, Founding Chairman and President, will present Asian Pastoral Institute and its vision and mission. Asian Pastoral Institute was first founded in 1999 to offer programmes in pastoral studies. In 2018, it launched its first programmes in counselling and community work, with students graduating in the class of 2021. Seven of its pastoral studies and counselling and community work programmes have been accredited by Asia Theological Association for a five-year period, 2021-2025. In July 2022, Asian Pastoral Institute moved into its new home at 20 Aljunied Road. This is a big milestone and starts a new chapter in the history of Asian Pastoral Institute, just as the Singapore Association for Counselling processes its formal recognition of the Master of Arts in Counselling and Community Work programme.

John Tan

Dr. John Tan, Fuller Alumni Regional Representative, will present Fuller Theological Seminary. John will share his vision of establishing the Fuller alumni chapter in this region. He will engage with the Fuller alumni in Singapore and prospective students to address remaining questions. John is the executive director of CARE Singapore, a youth serving-charity which he helped founded in 1997.  He has extensive experience helping youths and adults keen to make a caring impact in the lives of youths.

And Talk

by Professor Jose Abraham

Contemporary Christian living demands believers to stand ready to respond to daily challenges to Christian theology with a fresh reading of Scripture, and to communicate this in a language that speaks of an experience of God to a skeptical and pluralistic world. This calls for a hermeneutics with new approaches and practices that may engage peoples of different faiths and traditions in meaningful discourses to illumine truth and grace in a fallen world.

The Synopsis of Book Previews

Kerygmatic Hermeneutics is an account of how one may make theology in the Pentecostal-charismatic tradition. This constructive theological account also yields a practice of interpretation of Scripture in a community of faith. This formulation of kerygmatic theology and its hermeneutical practice opens theology to empirical enquiry and spiritual discernment in a post-Christian western world. This account is also existentially relevant for the global south and east, especially where readers find themselves having to speak apologetically into diverse faiths and spiritual practices in daily encounters.

Dr Swee Sum Lam

In Not Beyond Language: Wittgenstein and Lindbeck on the Problem of Speaking about God, K Tham advances, “Words are nearly all we have for expressing our experience of God. Yet they are inadequate for that task, for the divine is said to be ‘beyond language’. A proper understanding of language, grounded in our creatureliness, is needed if we are to navigate between the poles of skepticism on the one hand, and of absolutism on the other.”

The Synopsis of Professor Jose Abraham’s Talk

In my presentation, I will discuss the limitation of conventional approaches, which distinguish ‘us’ from ‘them.’  To bridge this gap, Amos Yong proposed a pneumatological theology. It focuses on the Spirit of God, which transcend all boundaries and is actively present in every society. His approach values the particularities of each tradition and offers a variety of practices for engaging with the other.
